SECOND TEAM William Greene Jr.  Morgan Stanley

William Greene Jr. of Morgan Stanley, who repeats in second place, “takes a global view and publishes a ton of data that allows you to drill down into companies,” one investor says. Greene, who also ranks second in Airfreight & Surface Transportation, focuses on short-term trading ideas within the sector because they are “windows of opportunity.” The analyst identified one such prospect in October 2010 and urged clients to buy AMR Corp., parent company of American Airlines, at $7.24, after the Fort Worth, Texas–based carrier’s just-released third-quarter earnings beat the Street’s expectations. Greene closed the call in early November, when the stock had flown 22.5 percent, to $8.87, and outperformed the sector by 19.1 percentage points.
