| Benjamin SwinburneMorgan Stanley | Two must be Benjamin Swinburne’s lucky number: He captures second place for a second straight year and is also No. 2 in Cable & Satellite. The Morgan Stanley researcher is “unique in his ability to marry a top-down industry approach with detailed bottom-up analysis on each company, enabling him to ferret out the winners and losers,” explains one portfolio manager. Says another: “His stock-picking skills are almost as valuable to me as are his general industry and company knowledge — something sell-side analysts are rarely valued for today.” Swinburne moved Madison Square Garden Co., a New York–based operator of music and regional sports networks, from equal weight to overweight in December, at $28.88, on valuation. By late August the stock had shot up 46.2 percent, to $42.21, and led the sector by 16.2 percentage points. “We currently assign an attractive industry view to the media sector, based on exposure to rapidly growing TV assets, above-market return-on- capital levels and historically low valuation levels,” he says, noting that he also has overweight ratings on New York–based CBS Corp. and Interpublic Group of Cos., and Walt Disney Co. of Burbank, California. |
