J.P. Morgan
First-place appearances: 8

Total appearances: 26

Team debut: 1994

New York–based Alan Alanis has been captain of J.P. Morgan’s crew since 2009. The team earned a runner-up spot that year, zoomed to No. 1 in 2010 — and has stayed there ever since. Alanis, 44, and his associate track 14 stocks and plan to increase coverage as soon as a third member joins the group. Their outlook is upbeat. “Most companies in the food and beverages sector remain well poised to deliver low-double-digit earnings growth driven by better prices and easy [comparable same-store sales] on volumes,” he says. “We endorse the idea of sticking to quality companies; that is, investing in a company that has a dominant market share position in a growing industry and is run by managers who balance well short- and long-term results.” Examples include Brazil-based brewer Cía. de Bebidas das Américas, better known as AmBev, and Mexico’s Fomento Económico Mexicano, or Femsa, the world’s largest independent Coca-Cola Co. bottler (as measured by product distribution). Alanis is a former codirector of investor relations at the latter outfit, and “his roots in the industry give him a perspective that I appreciate,” attests one client. — Pam Baker
