Despite high charges, sales of multi-manager funds nearly tripled in 2005, according to the Investment Management Association. One reason, according to IMA, is that investors feel it is worth the cost if they get better performance through greater diversity than what they would earn from their own fund picks. What's more, multi-managers may get better deal terms than the average retail investor, and more important, do all the research legwork.
