Chrysalis VCT has a new entry on the alternatives investments landscape: an investment instrument that invests not in masterpieces but in masters of the deal. Financial News reports that the venture capital group has launched a fund that will invest in "highly reputable and established art and antiques businesses." The firm draws distinctions from other such related offerings and such art projects as the Fine Art Fund and Fernwood Art Investments. Some investors reportedly shy away from such investments because of the volatility in the art market, but Chrysalis hopes to attract customers by painting a more conservative picture of the dealer. "The top 200 or 300 dealers make excellent returns," says Chrysalis Chairman Robert Drummond. Art consultant Spencer Ewen has been retained to advise on investments and valuations of dealerships.
