Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will offer $2 million in additional research funding to two scientists of the University of California, Business Journal reports. Joseph McCune and Dennis Hartigan-O’Connor, who each received $100,000 as first round funding in 2008, may get nearly $1 million each in follow-on funding.

The grant will be made through the foundation’s initiative Grand Challenges Explorations, which seeks to help researchers test unorthodox ways to deal with daunting global health and development problems. The two scientists are working on a possible HIV vaccine and HIV replication, respectively.
