Shiela Nicoll, director of conduct policy at the U.K.’s Financial Services Authority, opposes a single set of mortgage regulations for the European Union. Speaking before the Danish Parliament, Nicoll said that while there may be some valid arguments for having common standards, pan-EU regulations “allow the least flexibility to take account of particular circumstances.” She explained the mortgage markets of individual countries differ, and therefore regulation should be local.
