Singapore-based Bhuvnesh Singh, who is No. 1 in this sector and in Telecommunications, boasts “encyclopedic knowledge and a long-term perspective,” according to one buy-side enthusiast. The Credit Suisse analyst upgraded Tata Consultancy Services from underperform to outperform all the way back in November 2008, dubbing the shares a bargain at 246.49 rupees in light of surging global demand for outsourcing services; Singh has been pounding the table on the stock ever since. By the end of May 2011, shares of the Mumbai-based outfit had catapulted a mind-boggling 366.3 percent, to Rs1,149.30, surging 59.5 percent in the trailing 12 months alone and trouncing the sector by 43.8 percentage points during that period. Singh, 35, joined Credit Suisse from Morgan Stanley in 1999, the same year in which he acquired a postgraduate diploma in management from the Indian Institute of Management in Calcutta. “He has lots of experience and good contacts with managements,” marvels one investor. Declares another: “He is my most trustworthy source.”
