Investors attracted to the safety of covered bonds may be blinded by the lack of transparency on the underlying loans, warns M&G Investments. Commenting on the record amount of covered bonds issued by banks, Richard Ryan, M&G’s senior credit fund manager, said that while many of these assets are “exceptionally robust,” the worst ones “label themselves covered but offer a rollercoaster ride rather than disclosure or protection.”
