The U.K.’s Financial Services Authority is concerned about the way synthetic exchange traded funds are marketed and sold to retail investors, and may step in to protect consumers, according to Sheila Nicoll, the FSA’s director of conduct policy. In a related development, British financial advisers have said they are avoiding ETFs out of concern that the market is quickly evolving into a domain heavily populated by hedge funds and derivatives traders.
