Simon Cheung  Goldman Sachs (Asia)

The buy side says: “He’s someone I rely on for a good picture of the sector.”

Simon Cheung of Goldman Sachs (Asia) vaults from third place all the way to the No. 1 spot. “He gives me a lot of insight into local Hong Kong conglomerates,” says one buy-side backer. The 33-year-old analyst’s top calls of the past year include a September valuation-based upgrade to conviction buy on Cosco Pacific, a Hong Kong–based provider of shipping and logistics, following a road show with company management that led him to conclude that the stock was “well undervalued.” By the end of April, the stock had catapulted 50.5 percent, from HK$10.66 to HK$16.04, and shot past the sector by 58.9 percentage points. Cheung “has given me good recommendations on names that made money for us,” applauds one portfolio manager. The analyst, who graduated from Canada’s University of British Columbia with a bachelor’s degree in commerce in 1999, worked at Merrill Lynch as an analyst covering media stocks before moving to Goldman in 2008.
