SECOND TEAM
Hitoshi Shin UBS
After six years in first place, Hitoshi Shin of UBS slips to second. Praised for “outstanding forward-looking strategic analyses” by one buy-side enthusiast, Shin also garners support for his coverage of Toshiba Corp. In September he upgraded the Tokyo-based electronics producer from neutral to buy, at ¥386, arguing that an industrywide stabilization of semiconductor inventories signaled an imminent rally in sales of NAND flash memories, which are Toshiba’s strong suit. He was right, and by late February the stock had surged 38.6 percent, to ¥535, and outpaced the sector by 14.5 percentage points.
Polling and tabulation of data as well as reporting on the sector profiles were completed before the March 11 Tohoku earthquake.
