SECOND TEAM

Takashi Miyazaki Citi

Newcomer Takashi Miyazaki of Citi shoots straight in at second place. “He is a hardworking young man,” declares one impressed client. In June, Miyazaki upgraded Idemitsu Kosan Co. from hold to buy, at ¥6,260, expecting improving margins in the Tokyo-based oil and gas producer’s petrochemicals division. When the stock had flown to ¥8,030 in late November, for a gain of 28.3 percent that bested the sector by 25.4 percentage points, he reduced it back to hold. The downgrade was premature, however: The stock continued to rise, advancing an additional 18.2 percent to end February at ¥9,630 but outpacing the sector by only 1.7 points over that period.

Polling and tabulation of data as well as reporting on the sector profiles were completed before the March 11 Tohoku earthquake.
