Takashi Miyazaki Citi

The buy side says: “Miyazaki goes above and beyond for his clients.”

Citi’s Takashi Miyazaki, who debuted in second place last year, advances one level to capture his first No. 1 finish. The 31-year-old “is a very well-balanced analyst who has a handle on both top-down and bottom-up research,” observes one client. Miyazaki reports on 21 companies — the same number as last year — and among energy providers, his top pick is Tokyo-based JX Holdings, on valuation as well as its strong profit-growth potential, owing to rising production at its Chilean copper mine, among other factors. He also likes refineries. “Although there is an issue of demand deterioration, the industry is balancing supply and demand well — and capacity will be reduced by the end of March 2014, in line with government policy,” Miyazaki explains. “We expect the market to react positively if refinery margins appear stable and strong on the back of capacity reductions and other measures.” Miyazaki joined Citi in 2005 after earning a master of science degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from Tokyo University. — Leslie Kramer
