Yin Lun (Alvin) Kwock & team J.P. Morgan
Yin Lun (Alvin) Kwock captains the J.P. Morgan quintet to a third straight third-place finish. The Hong Kong–based analysts, who follow 33 companies, aren’t “swung by the increasingly short-term focus of the market,” proclaims one buy-side advocate. The team also wins plaudits for its call on Quanta Computer, recommended in September 2010 and highlighted repeatedly since on its “disruptive business model” — the company uses inexpensive generic servers, which results in lower capital expenditure costs, higher sales and better margins, Kwock explains. “This model is not well understood in the market, and we have done a lot of primary research visiting China and Silicon Valley companies, and also Internet and telecom customers,” he adds. Shares of the notebook-computer manufacturer, which is headquartered in Taiwan, rose 14 percent and trumped the sector by 25.5 percentage points in the 12 months through March. — Pam Baker
