Newcomer Patrick Hansen, who is stationed in Tokyo, directs the Macquarie Capital Securities group of seven to a second straight visit to the No. 3 spot. The analysts’ strength “is a willingness to look at slightly esoteric ideas, particularly those requiring new data sources,” asserts one buy-side backer. “They also have incorporated quite sophisticated techniques into their modeling processes.” Hansen says that everything will come down to earnings and how much the overall macro environment will influence the market. “That’s the scary part, because companies can do well — but if Europe decides to have another scare, that will play a bigger role in investors’ minds regardless of how well companies do,” he explains. Nonetheless, the team is keeping its focus on fundamentals and valuations. “What we try to do is match up time frames where we’ve seen, historically, similarities in the economic environment,” Hansen explains. — Carolyn Koo
