The Morgan Stanley researcher “has a natural curiosity and remarkable intuition — two qualities that make for a great analyst,” says one portfolio manager, while another credits him with having “a good perspective on competitive dynamics.” Swinburne downgraded Cablevision Systems Corp. from equal weight to underweight in April 2011, at $22.34, primarily on valuation. By the end of August 2012, shares of the Bethpage, New York–based provider of digital television and high-speed Internet services had tumbled 33.1 percent, to $14.95, and trailed the Standard & Poor’s sector benchmark by 57.1 percentage points. “His stock-picking skills are almost as valuable to me as are his general industry and company knowledge — something sell-side analysts are rarely valued for today,” observes one backer. |
