Claude Honegger
Co–Chief Information Officer
Credit Suisse
PNR
The emergence of technologically disruptive start-ups in wealth management spurred Credit Suisse to respond in kind with an application of its own for high-net-worth customers. Leading the charge is co-CIO Claude Honegger, 48, who oversees information technology for the Zurich-based institution’s private banking, wealth management and shared services divisions. The Credit Suisse Private Banking app, launched in Singapore and Switzerland in March, provides tools for trading securities and foreign exchange, scanning news and research, monitoring investment performance and communicating with bankers. “Digitalization,” says Honegger, “is a supercatalyst to review the way you are doing business,” and it has led Credit Suisse to take a fresh look at its business models, processes and interactions with clients. “It triggers all the right discussions that you need to have in the background.” Since joining Credit Suisse in 1987, Honegger worked his way up through a number of IT positions to co-CIO in early 2013. He believes that private banking, in comparison with investment banking (whose co-CIO Nigel Faulkner recently resigned) and other areas, “will see the biggest disruption.” Major challenges in developing the new private banking platform involved deciding which features to include and whether to build the functionality internally or buy it from outside. Honegger foresees more partnerships with new tech players — Credit Suisse has joined with other major banks in supporting New York’s FinTech Innovation Lab incubation program — to keep abreast of breakthroughs and adapt as necessary to serve an increasingly tech-savvy clientele.
