Analyst Debut: 2011In third place on this roster is CLSA’s Abhijeet Naik, who earned a runner-up position last year. Mumbai-based Naik monitors six stocks in this sector plus seven Indian metals and mining names. Investors particularly laud Naik’s coverage of New Delhi’s Maruti Suzuki India and Mumbai-based Mahindra & Mahindra. Because demand was swelling for their four-wheeled vehicles and each of these diversified manufacturers boasts a strong new-products lineup, he elevated both companies from buy to outperform, Maruti last October followed by M&M in January. Sure enough, by late last month, the shares had soared 110.9 percent and 41.3 percent, respectively. Maruti closed at 3,177.20 rupees and led its peers by 74.1 percentage points, while M&M reached Rs1,263.70 and bested the sector by 3.3 percentage points. They remain among the analyst’s top picks in the group. Naik “has a sharp eye for the triggers that move stocks and always explains his arguments clearly and persuasively,” reports one portfolio manager.
