It’s three consecutive years in the third position for UBS’s squad, which is now captained solely by Bosco Ojeda in Madrid. Former co-leader Alexander Hugh joined London-based money manager TT International in April. The rest of the ten-member troupe, which has been reduced by five over the past year, is spread across offices in Frankfurt, London, Paris, Stockholm and Zurich. The group’s research “tells me all there is to know about what’s going on with the companies and what’s going to move markets,” one backer attests. Ojeda and his colleagues believe that the European recovery will be positive for small- and midcap stocks this year, as rising real gross domestic product growth drives revenue recovery and cost-containment measures result in higher margins. Sectors and companies that are exposed to increasing consumer and corporate demand in Europe earn the researchers’ favor. One such is NH Hoteles, a Spain-based hotel and resort chain with operations in several countries on the Continent, which Ojeda deems “a good play into the European recovery.” Another is U.K.-based Darty, Europe’s third-largest electronics retailer, because it is “quite exposed to European consumption” and is “restructuring and enhancing loss-making businesses,” Ojeda explains.
