For a second year running, Deutsche Bank’s Tracy Yu and her 14-member squad capture the No. 2 position. The team has analysts stationed in Bangkok, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Manila, Mumbai, Seoul and Sydney, and they look favorably on the prospects for Chinese banks this year, despite uncertainty surrounding new regulations. That nation’s banking stocks tumbled 12.5 percent this year through late April, while the broader sector inched up 1 percent. Even so, says Yu, “while Chinese banks have underperformed, on growth and asset-quality concerns, we believe these headwinds should subside by the second half of 2014, when the cloud clears on trust products and corporate bond defaults, leading to a rerating of the Chinese bank stocks from the current depressed levels.” Clients are grateful for the guidance. “Tracy has the ability to discuss the complexities of Chinese banks and break down her thought process in a way that galvanizes her story,” remarks one investor. “Her depth of knowledge of the Chinese financial industry is unparalleled.”
