Analyst debut: 2014Debuting on this list in the No. 3 position is Ge (Edwin) Chen of UBS. From his base in Hong Kong, the strategist monitors 15 Chinese small- and midcap stocks. Chen acknowledges ramping up his travel schedule and client interactions during the past year, partly because the overall economic slowdown engendered greater interest in the kind of niche opportunities in which he specializes. “Edwin has good ideas,” affirms one portfolio manager. In August, Chen began reporting on Beijing Urban Construction Design & Development Group Co., assigning the stock a buy rating. The Beijing-based construction contractor and subway planner was enjoying a steady order flow and backlog, he advised. By late last month the stock had climbed 34 percent, to HK$4.69, against the sector’s decline of 1.4 percent. He still recommends it, with a price objective of HK$4.96. Looking ahead, Chen predicts that “investors will continue focusing on sectors of which the growth drivers are different or isolated from the overall economy in China.”
