Analyst Debut: 2014In 2011 and 2012, buy-siders named J. David Vernon a Rising Star of Wall Street Research, and now they award him his first appearance on the All-America Research Team, in third place on this lineup. Before joining Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. in 2010, Vernon held management positions at DHL Express and other freight and transportation companies, and clients appreciate the value in that background. The analyst “differentiates himself with his industry experience,” remarks one backer, “which makes him unusually knowledgeable about end-market dynamics and cost structures.” Of the eight U.S. airfreight and surface transportation stocks in his purview, Vernon prefers logistics provider J.B. Hunt Transport Services of Lowell, Arkansas. Crediting the company’s accelerated earnings growth, he upgraded the stock from market perform to outperform in July, with a target price of $91. Two months later, J.B. Hunt’s share price had slipped 2.6 percent, to $74.72, while the sector was down 3.1 percent. “Dave takes the long view, backed by sound logic,” proclaims another asset manager, “and his models are especially thorough.”
