Analyst Debut: 2014Newcomer Michael Lasser captures third place. The UBS analyst “distinguishes himself by providing investors with real-time perspective from sources that may be below or off investor radar screens,” lauds one portfolio manager. Lasser’s recent research has largely concentrated on how technology and the Internet are affecting consumer shopping habits. “We’re focused on those retailers that have a differentiated concept, or a moat that will allow them to maintain above-average margins,” he explains. One example is Brentwood, Tennessee–based Tractor Supply Co., a ranch and farm supply store that serves rural communities with a wide range of products, from pet foot to overalls. “They are consolidating in a fragmented industry,” says Lasser. He issued a buy recommendation on the stock in February 2013, and by the middle of last month, it had leaped 18.6 percent, to $60.19.
