Sanford C. Bernstein’s trio led by Pierre Ferragu enjoyed a three-year reign at No. 1 in Telecommunications Equipment. That sector is now rolled up with Technology/Semiconductors to create this new category, and London-based Ferragu’s troupe lands in third place. The researchers, whose coverage universe spans ten stocks, impress clients with their “detailed and deep knowledge of the companies they cover,” one portfolio manager reports. “Their frameworks to analyze events and investment theses are clever and often ground-breaking.” Ferragu declines to discuss specific stock recommendations but says that he and his colleagues are advising clients to be prepared for 2014 to be a challenging year. “There will be lots of fundamental changes,” he notes, “and most quality names are at rather full valuation levels.”
