Analyst Debut: 2014In his first appearance on this lineup, Amit Golchha seizes first place, ending at three years Credit Suisse analyst Amish Shah’s run at the top. The 32-year-old Emkay Global Financial Services researcher monitors 17 Indian power players and wins investor praise for “stepping up his game a notch,” as one fund manager puts it. In August 2013, Golchha advised investors that government policies such as increasing tariffs on imported coal were a boon to domestic utilities, so he reiterated his buy ratings on two names in that segment: Calcutta’s CESC and Gurgaon-based Power Grid Corp. of India. As of late last month, shares of the energy suppliers had surged 129.5 percent, to 674.45 rupees, and 48.1 percent, to Rs139.80, respectively. During the same period, India’s power companies generally rose 29.5 percent. He continues to see considerable upside for both providers, naming them top picks going forward and assigning their stocks respective price objectives of Rs830 and Rs161. “It pays to listen to Amit,” asserts another buy-side fan. Golchha earned a master’s degree in finance from the University of Mumbai. He signed up with Emkay in 2008 after working at Mumbai investment firm Techno Shares & Stocks, where he covered Indian entertainment names. “Amit is smart, energetic and invariably helpful,” concludes another booster.
