Analyst debut: 2011After falling from the rankings last year, Vinay Jaising of Morgan Stanley returns with a third-place finish on this roster and a runner-up showing in Telecommunications. Covering nine Indian oil and gas names plus five telecoms companies, the researcher stands out for bullish views. Moreover, “Vinay’s calls have certainly helped our performance,” reports one portfolio manager in Hong Kong. Among the shares the analyst is touting in this sector are New Delhi’s Oil and Natural Gas Corp., a state-owned exploration and production company, and Mumbai-headquartered refiner and marketer Hindustan Petroleum Corp. In January he named ONGC a top pick, in part because price hikes were continuing to support the upstream player’s profitability. Sure enough, by late October the stock had leaped 46.2 percent, to 399.45 rupees, outperforming its peers by 25.3 percentage points. Jaising upgraded Hindustan Petroleum from equal weight to overweight in March, citing such catalysts as declining crude-oil prices and a stable currency. Through late October the shares soared 84 percent, to Rs522.70, against the sector’s rise of 11.4 percent.
