Team debut: 2006Douglas Harned of Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. repeats in second place. Monitoring 14 U.S. aerospace and defense electronics names, the analyst wins praise for being “the lone bull on defense,” as one portfolio manager puts it — “and he was right.” Among the analyst’s top picks is Lockheed Martin Corp., which he upgraded from market perform to outperform in November 2012. High free-cash-flow yields would offset forthcoming reductions in defense budgets, he reasoned, noting as well that additional cuts in military spending were unlikely. Sure enough, shares of the Bethesda, Maryland–based defense giant had rocketed 91.3 percent by the middle of last month, to $175.60, climbing 42.7 percent during the trailing 12 months alone and besting their peers by 26.3 percentage points over that period. Harned’s price objective for Lockheed Martin is $201. Another of his favorite names is diversified aerospace player Boeing Co., partly thanks to strong margin performance in its commercial aircraft division. The Chicago-based manufacturer’s shares were trading at $126.31 in mid-September, and the researcher forecasts that they will climb to $175.
