Team debut: 2013Marking his first appearance among the top three on this list is Todd Juenger, who rises from runner-up. The Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. analyst, whom buy-siders deemed a Rising Star of Wall Street Research in 2012, is hailed for his “great industry research,” in the words of one fund manager, who also applauds his “extremely helpful” focus groups. Juenger reports on nine U.S. media companies and is broadly upbeat on the sector’s prospects for the near term, forecasting that advertising spending through the end of this year will be stronger than markets have feared — and have priced into the group’s shares. “Over time, however, we strongly believe that international will be the single biggest factor separating winners from losers,” he advises. “International pay-tv markets will grow and compound for years to come, whereas the U.S. market will get marginally worse.” As a result, the best performers will likely be those companies with the strongest exposure to non-U.S. markets, says Juenger, such as Silver Spring, Maryland’s Discovery Communications and New York–based Twenty-First Century Fox. Those whose focus is primarily domestic — for example, CBS Corp. and Viacom of New York, and Knoxville, Tennessee–headquartered Scripps Network Interactive — will find themselves at a disadvantage, he concludes.
