| | Scott Davis | | Barclays | | First-place appearances: 3 Total appearances: 9 Analyst debut: 2005 | Repeat first-teamer Scott Davis of Barclays remains in investors’ good graces with a combination of “informed wisdom” and an “uncanny ability to consistently identify winners,” as one buy-side supporter puts it. The 45-year-old’s May think piece laying out ten principles of investing in industrials is fondly recalled by one reader for “helpfully divulging bits of information he and his team have dug up.” In September 2012, Davis, who reports on 26 names, upgraded Dover Corp. of Downers Grove, Illinois, from equal weight to overweight, at $60.46, citing valuation as well as management’s growing cash-reinvestment program and renewed interest in enhancing shareholder value. By the end of August, shares of the manufacturer of tank trailers and other industrial equipment had vaulted 40.7 percent, to $85.05, and outperformed the sector by 18.1 percentage points. Dover remains a top pick. Another favorite is Fairfield, Connecticut–based General Electric Co., thanks to a pickup in power-generation orders and its high dividend yield. “His recommendations always seem to come to fruition,” concludes another money manager. — Ben Mattlin |
