Credit Suisse’s Vinícius Canheu slips to the No. 2 spot. The São Paulo–based analyst, who reports on 16 stocks, downgraded Cía. Energética de São Paulo from neutral to underperform in September, at 20.65 reais, on concern about the removal of tax concessions for select utilities. In November, after details of the government’s policy changes were formally disclosed, he moved the São Paulo–based electricity generator’s shares back to neutral, figuring the worst of the rout was over. At that point, they were down 24 percent, to 15.70 reais, and trailing the sector by 11.4 percentage points. “One of the great calls of the year,” proclaims one grateful client. In March, with the stock up 17.8 percent, to 18.49 reais, he upgraded it further, to outperform. By mid-July the shares had climbed to 19.54 reais, besting the sector by 20.5 percentage points. Canheu remains bullish, citing the utility’s “favorable outlook for the pricing of its large uncontracted capacity.” — Ben Mattlin
