Carter Braxton Worth of Oppenheimer & Co., who claims third place for a second year running, is something of a celebrity analyst, popping up regularly as a commentator on Fast Money and other CNBC business news television programs. He retains a loyal audience in the institutional community as well. “I use him extensively,” says one money manager. “He has been especially helpful at calling both the overbought and oversold extremes.” Among Worth’s current positions is the admonition that consumer discretionary and financials groups, massive outperformers among U.S. sectors during the past two years, will no longer best the broad market because too many of them have been trading below their 150-day moving averages — and those indicators are on the verge of turning down, he believes. “Many important large-capitalization stocks around the world have topped or are topping,” Worth noted in August. On the upside he’s forecasting a sustained fourth-quarter rebound in the price of gold, seeing recovery from the June low of $1,192 per ounce. He expects the commodity, which fetched $1,394.75 on August 30, to top out at $1,450. Worth “is that rarest of combinations for a technical analyst: an extremely practical resource for a decidedly fundamental investor,” another client avers. — Paul Sweeney
