For a seventh year in a row, Citi’s Gary Taylor claims second-place honors. “Gary has been conducting monthly surveys with hospital management teams for several years,” relates one buy-side backer, “and the information he provides is often an early warning system for the utilization trends in his sector.” The sector delivered strong gains year to date through August, climbing 26.8 percent and pacing the S&P 500 by 12.3 percentage points. Taylor believes that the extension of health care coverage to more people as a result of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act’s taking full force will be key to how the stocks trade for the balance of 2013 and during 2014. “If implemented on schedule, we believe the enrollment can surprise the market to the upside, driving further outperformance,” he says. In the small-cap segment, Taylor’s top pick for 2013 is Knoxville, Tennessee–based Team Health Holdings. “About 20 percent of its patients are currently uninsured, and therefore the company has great leverage to expansion of insurance coverage under Obamacare in 2014,” he notes. The shares jumped 33.6 percent this year through August, climbing from $28.77 to $38.43. Taylor “makes timely rating changes and has a good understanding of the operating models of the companies he follows,” the same supporter asserts.— Leslie Kramer
