Debuting in second place is Ivano Westin of Credit Suisse. Following nine stocks from offices in São Paulo, Westin wins special praise for his insightful coverage of Belo Horizonte–based Usinas Siderúrgicas de Minas Gerais, one of Brazil’s largest steel producers. In August 2012 he upgraded the shares from underperform to neutral, at 7.26 reais, partly on stable-to-rising steel prices and the depreciating Brazilian currency. In December, after the stock had soared 67.4 percent, to 12.15 reais, he lowered it back to underperform, primarily on valuation. By mid-July the shares had tumbled 46.1 percent, to 6.55 reais, and trailed the sector by 16.3 percentage points. “He was the first to draw our attention to changes at Usinas,” reports one appreciative client. “These were counterconsensus calls that benefited our performance.” — Ben Mattlin
