Reclaiming the No. 1 spot after two years in second place is Hiroshi Koba — the “most knowledgeable analyst in the sector,” according to one buy-side loyalist. The Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities Co. researcher covers just 12 stocks and is generally neutral on the sector. “With the shifting political winds in Japan, I think inflation and salary hikes will be the themes for this year,” says Koba, 46. “If the time between prices going up and salaries increasing is extended, there is a risk that consumers will become cautious and that spending patterns will be altered.” Nonetheless, he is a fan of Shimachu Co., a furniture and home furnishings retailer headquartered in Saitama. “The home-center business model will find its footing, and home furnishing sales will be strong,” he predicts. — Pam Baker
