Down one notch to No. 3 is Santander’s Daniel Gewehr, who also captures second place in Health Care. An April road trip to visit the six capital goods companies he follows — plus many more customers, privately held competitors and suppliers — earns high marks as “truly comprehensive, complete with channel checks,” as one money manager puts it. In July 2012 the São Paulo–based analyst highlighted his buy rating on Marcopolo, at 8 reais, arguing that the Caxias do Sul–headquartered bus-chassis builder would benefit from government bus purchases. In January, after the stock had bolted 55.6 percent, to 12.45 reais, and bested the sector by 47.6 percentage points, he reduced it to hold, on valuation. The shares slipped to 11 reais in June before starting to recover; by mid-July they had risen to 11.36 reais, but Gewehr stands by his neutral rating. — Ben Mattlin
