Advancing from second place to top the roster for the first time is BTG Pactual’s Antonio Junqueira. Based in Rio de Janeiro and covering 20 stocks, the 30-year-old pleases clients with his “fast reactions to market and company events, with detailed explanations and analyses of potential impacts,” according to one money manager. One example: In September, when a government proposal not to renew certain utilities’ tax waivers was made public — the actual changes weren’t officially announced until November — Junqueira immediately downgraded Cía. Energética de São Paulo from neutral to sell, at 26.65 reais. The very next day the stock plunged 27.5 percent, to 19.31 reais, and has only just recovered. By mid-July the São Paulo–based electricity generator’s shares had inched up to 19.54 reais, for a life-of-call loss of nearly 30 percent that lagged the broad market by 13.7 percentage points. Junqueira earned an MBA at Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro and worked as a credit analyst at Banco Modal before joining UBS in 2005 to cover telecommunications companies.
